MFA vs. PhD in Creative Writing: Length, Coursework and Funding
How the MFA and the PhD in creative writing differ in length, literature coursework, exams, dissertation, admission requirements and the way funding is structured.
Updated October 9, 2026 · Creative Writing Programs editorial team
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and the PhD in creative writing both end in a book-length creative manuscript, but they are built for different amounts of time and different kinds of study. An MFA is a writing-focused degree; the examples here run from one to three years. The creative writing PhDs described below add years of literature coursework, examinations, language study and a critical component to the dissertation. In our directory (October 2026) there are 93 MFA programs and 2 PhD programs (how we count); that gap reflects how few dedicated creative writing doctorates we have verified so far, and the examples below come from the schools' official pages. Confirm details with each program, since requirements and funding terms change.
Length and pace
MFA lengths vary widely. Boston University's MFA is built to be completed in one to one and a half years. Brown's Literary Arts MFA runs two years, with eight courses spread out to leave time for writing. Ohio State's MFA is three years. The MFA overview explains how to compare these.
The two PhDs in our directory are longer. USC's PhD in Creative Writing & Literature is designed to take five years, full time and in residence; the program states it offers no low-residency or online option. The University of Houston offers teaching-assistantship support for five years (ten long semesters) in its PhD, compared with three years (six long semesters) in its MFA.
What you study
The biggest difference is the share of literature and research.
MFA. Workshops are the core, usually alongside some literature or craft courses. Brown's MFA consists of three workshops, four graduate electives and a thesis. Houston's MFA, which the department describes as not a studio degree, still centers on writing: five creative writing classes, three literature classes and two electives (36 hours), plus 6 hours of thesis and a reading knowledge of a foreign language.
PhD. Literature carries more weight, and there are exams. USC requires 56 units of coursework, 32 of them in literature and 24 in creative writing, plus 8 units of dissertation work, field examinations in three fields and translation proficiency in at least one foreign language. Houston requires 45 hours of coursework including a literary studies specialization, reading knowledge of two foreign languages or intensive knowledge of one, and doctoral exams made up of two written exams and one oral exam.
| Houston MFA | Houston PhD | USC PhD | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coursework | 36 hours + 6 thesis hours | 45 hours | 56 units + 8 dissertation units |
| Languages | Reading knowledge of one | Two, or intensive knowledge of one | Translation proficiency in one |
| Exams | Thesis defense | Two written, one oral | Field exams in three fields |
| Assistantship years | Up to 3 | Up to 5 | 5 years of funding (3 fellowship, 2 TA) |
The final project
An MFA thesis is a creative manuscript; Houston pairs it with a 10–15 page reflective introduction and a defense. A PhD dissertation adds a scholarly element. At USC it is a book-length creative manuscript plus a critical component of roughly 60–80 pages. At Houston the creative dissertation includes a critical afterword and is defended before the full committee.
Admission requirements
Applying to a PhD usually means showing you can write criticism as well as creative work.
- Prior degree. USC states that a bachelor's degree is its only educational requirement and a master's is not needed; up to 12 units may be transferred from an MFA or a master's in English. Houston's minimum requirement is an MA in English or an MFA in creative writing, with a 3.5 GPA in graduate study.
- Critical writing sample. Both PhDs ask for one in addition to the creative sample: USC asks for a scholarly critical work of 10–25 pages (book reviews do not count), and Houston for a paper written for a literature course.
- Creative sample. USC asks for about 25 pages of fiction or nonfiction or about 10–12 pages of poetry; Houston's PhD asks for up to 10 pages of poetry or 20–25 pages of fiction.
MFA application materials vary from school to school, so read each program's admission page for sample length and other requirements. Master of Arts (MA) programs in creative writing also exist, but they fall outside this directory's scope.
How funding is structured
Funding terms differ by program, not by degree title, so read the published policy closely.
- Duration. In these examples, PhD packages run longer because the degree does. USC states that all incoming PhD students receive five years of guaranteed funding with full tuition remission, health insurance and a stipend; it does not print the stipend amount, and funded students may not take on other employment at the same time.
- Guarantee versus effort. Houston offers assistantships with guaranteed tuition remission for their duration, but describes placing everyone who seeks one as a serious effort rather than a promise. Its published first-year salaries are $18,235.89 (MFA) and $20,448.36 (PhD), each for nine months.
- Teaching. The assistantships described here involve teaching. Houston lists a 2/2 load for most years in both degrees; at Brown, second-year MFA teaching assistants teach one undergraduate workshop per semester.
Remember that a stipend paid over nine months is not the same as one paid over twelve, and "fully funded" does not cover every expense. Our funding methodology explains how we classify packages, and our list of fully funded MFA programs shows what each school publishes.
Choosing between them
Consider an MFA if your main goal is time and structured feedback for a manuscript. Consider a PhD if you also want sustained literary study, are comfortable with exams and a critical dissertation, and can commit to roughly five years. Some writers do both in sequence; Houston's admission rules and USC's transfer-credit policy show that programs handle an earlier MFA differently. Neither degree guarantees publication or academic employment. Compare candidates in the PhD listings and confirm everything on the programs' official pages.
