About Creative Writing Programs

Creative Writing Programs helps writers find and compare dedicated creative writing degrees in the United States: undergraduates looking for a BFA or BA in creative writing, writers weighing a campus-based, low-residency or fully online MFA, and those considering a PhD. You can browse by degree, state and city, format, genre and verified funding, and compare up to four programs side by side.

How the directory is built

We list a program only after checking, on the school's own pages, that its awarded degree is a dedicated creative writing degree. Each fact — genres, residencies, admissions, portfolio rules, deadlines, tuition and funding — carries the official page it came from and the date we verified it. Institutional details (official name, address, public or private control) come from the U.S. Department of Education's IPEDS data. Details are in our methodology.

Editorial independence

Directory pages are listed alphabetically. Our “Best” lists are editorial selections against published criteria, unnumbered and based on verified evidence only. Schools can buy clearly labelled sponsored placements; payment never changes facts, funding classifications, the order of results or editorial selections.

Coverage

Coverage is partial and growing. We started with a bounded set of programs researched in depth and add schools through the same verification workflow. If a dedicated creative writing degree is missing, tell us about it.
